What did you get yourself for Mother’s Day?

I bought myself a Mother’s Day present last week. You see, there’s a salt salon that just opened up in my area, and I wanted to try it out. I had no idea that salt salons were a thing, but apparently they are. Now I’m usually pretty thrifty, but there was a sale—of course!—so I decided to try it. After all, sitting in a zero gravity chair in a warm room for 45 minutes, all while getting health benefits, sounds like a pretty sweet deal.

But I think there’s something more. I’m doing this because, especially when the kids were younger, they got a frazzled mom. Today we have three teenagers, and our calendar is incredibly full. I realized that if I want them to know how to live a full life that also includes rest, I need to set an example. After all, lately it seems the only way moms talk about coping with parenting is by needing wine—and, frankly, I don’t think that’s the best example. 

So because Mother’s Day is Sunday and this month is Mental Health Awareness Month, I’m thinking that this is the perfect reminder for moms to model intentional rest. It’s fine to have lots of things on the calendar—from work to volunteering to kids’ activities. And, yes, those things will get out of balance sometimes. But let’s not think we need to stay in the crazy-busy cycle, which leads us to talk about our blessings and opportunities as if they were curses.

So this Mother’s Day, give yourself a present and rest. Need some ideas? 

  1. Get off of your device. Set a timer for 20 minutes and read a book.
  2. Call a friend to catch up.
  3. Close your eyes for 2 full minutes and focus on your breathing.
  4. Find a mom’s group in your area and meet up with them—face-to-face!
  5. Pray not only for your kids but also for yourself. (I’ve written a handy-dandy book to help you do that.) 
  6. Swap babysitting with another mom.
  7. Meditate. Pick a promise from God and read it over and over. Then memorize it. 
  8. Exercise—even if it’s just 5 minutes of burpees or a 10-minute walk around your house while the kids are sleeping.

Not only will you have a happy Mother’s Day, but your kids will get a happy mother.
