Quite a few of the founders of the United States were Deists—that is, they believed that God created the world and then basically let go of everything. The Deists gave God the Father credit for making everything, but they were skeptical of the Bible’s stories that God himself in the person of Jesus Christ actually came to earth to help the people who lived there.
Does it surprise you to know that God still keeps track of all his creatures, including the animal world? How reassuring it is to watch Jesus work and to see how the animal world obeys its master—pigs and fish alike. Jesus said once that not even a sparrow can fall out of the sky without God’s knowledge and permission: “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. . . . Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (Luke 12:6,7). If God cares that much about sparrows, how much more valuable are you—for Jesus came to this world not as a bird, but as a person like you, to save people just like you.
You know what amazes me even more than the fact that God can keep track of billions of earth’s animals? That he thinks you and I are worth saving.
