Death is dead wrong

“When Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment . . . the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people” (Matthew 27:50-53).

For hours, Jesus suffered the horrible wrath of his Father and battled death. Then, at the moment of his choosing, he died. Death thought it had won, but death was wrong.

When Jesus died, holy people came back to life.

The day Jesus took our punishment is filled with so many incomprehensible, overwhelming details, that this portion of the story easily gets overlooked. When the temple curtain was torn, an earthquake rocked the area, and dead people came back to life. They came out of their tombs, waited three days until Jesus came out of his, and then went around the city, putting the full power of his resurrection on display.

Jesus’ victory over death is just as real for you too. When Jesus died on the cross, he took your punishment. When Jesus died, your sinful self died. When Jesus died, you were set free. When Jesus died, you came back to life.

Death still pretends it is winning, but death is still wrong. You are alive. Now you get to appear to many people. You get to put the full power of his resurrection on display.

Today is a good day to do that.
