“I got this.”—Every guy who ever lived.
Why are guys so afraid to ask for help anyway? And it isn’t just refusing help from human beings. They refuse help from sheets of instructions. Don’t they know that it would be much easier and much more efficient to just ask for help every once in a while?
Females have the same flaw, but for them it takes a different form that goes something like this: “Awww, you shouldn’t have.” Ladies, you know you say it. But why do you say it? Here’s why. When someone does something really nice for you, there’s a small feeling of guilt if you didn’t do something nice for them. Part of you wants to give back whatever they gave you so that things will be even.
For both men and women, the root of all this is pride. Pride refuses help from others. Pride wants things to be even.
With Jesus there is no room for pride. He taught a very important lesson when he washed the disciples’ feet. He is the one who must help you. He is the one who must give you forgiveness.
With your new life in him secured, he wants the abandonment of pride to be a regular exercise in your life. While you serve others out of love for God, give others the opportunity to serve you too.
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).
