“Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, [the Jews] still would not believe in him. . . . Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved human praise more than praise from God” (John 12:37,42,43).
Ouch. That sounds like someone familiar. It sounds like me—and possibly like you. We love Jesus, but sometimes it is tempting to downplay the hard things he says that might make others uncomfortable. Or maybe we don’t want to be generous with our time, money, energy, and prayers. Then there are the times we don’t want to stand up for what is right because it will cause trouble.
We have a ton of excuses for why we keep quiet about our faith, don’t we? It’s more comfortable. We fit in better. We risk far less rejection. Today is a day to get out of our earthly comfort zone and look for ways to openly acknowledge our faith. Speak boldly, act lovingly, shine his light brightly. And look forward to that day when we will hear God tell us, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” (Matthew 25:23).
