You've Been Commissioned: You Are Big Now

When civilians get caught in a war zone with live fire, their first instinct is to dive for cover, keep their heads down, stay motionless, and refuse to emerge until everything is peaceful again.

You know, as you ponder the terrible power of our deadly enemies and try to visualize the shocking collapse of the physical universe, I can’t blame you if you feel like a civilian. I can’t blame you if you feel small and weak and insignificant and just want to hide until Jesus comes for you.

Does it surprise you to hear that you’ve been drafted into God’s army? Does it surprise you that he thinks you are talented and useful for his great purposes? Does it surprise you that he has urgently important work for you to do?

Are you ready to step up into his service? Read on . . .

You Are Big Now

Don’t you just hate windbags who are full of themselves? I love being with humble people. They just seem more real and more approachable. They don’t make me feel inferior. With them I don’t feel pressure to perform or pretend to be somebody I’m not.

But you know there’s also such a thing as false humility. Most of us are slick enough to feign ignorance or ineptitude when a job is coming that we don’t like. Have you ever, like Jeremiah, tried to evade a grown-up role in God’s kingdom work with the ol’ modesty routine? “‘Ah, Sovereign Lord,’ I said, ‘I do not know how to speak; I am only a child.’ But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not say, “I am only a child.” You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you’” (Jeremiah 1:6,7).

Quit making excuses. Stop thinking of yourself as a spiritual child. Grow up. Get some training. Join us and be part of God’s rescue team.
